This castle is a glorious example of the impregnable Medieval fortress, built on the spur of a rock above the river Carpino, on a steep hill dominating the surrounding valley. Impossible to access on three sides, the gateway comprised a wooden drawbridge (currently in stone) built over the moat and an imposing arched loggia.
The castle dates back to the XIth century but it has been restored and expanded throughout time by its various landlords, especially during the Renaissance period. In the 1980s the present owners have carried out renovation works (mainly on the internal layout) in order to turn the property into a holiday complex with 30 double bedrooms. The rest of the rooms have been left unfinished and this enables the future buyer to give his personal touch.
The fortress has a pentagonal plan as it constitutes of a main structure and of 5 watchtowers, 3 of which can still be admired today.
The total floor area measures 1,145 sqm (1,025 sqm of living space and 120 sqm of outbuildings and storage rooms) and the entire plot belonging to the property is of about 4,400 sqm.
On the ground floor we find the former stables, warehouses, cellars, prisons and the guardhouses which give onto the huge courtyard. The landlords accommodation was on the first floor (which also included a magnificent private chapel) and on the second floor, hosting the bedrooms and bathrooms.
This striking dwelling has an undeniable historical and cultural value and it is just waiting to be renovated and brought back to its original splendor, offering a great potential to house a holiday complex/spa hotel/restaurant/convention center etc. and therefore enable a public enjoyment of its magnificence.
Thanks to its hill-top location, the castle provides amazing views towards the mountains and the valleys, which are extremely rich in water falls, caves and natural springs, an idyllic environment to explore surrouded by a pristine nature.
The awe-inspiring 'borgo' of Carpinone is conveniently located less than 10 miles from Isernia and on the border with Abruzzo, Lazio and Campania.
